UHS International Students (2024)

The following medical clearance requirements must be completed before you will be allowed to register for classes. You also must wait one business day following your admission to UT Austin to access the MyUHS portal.

Requirements

Tuberculosis (TB) Test

Screening Questionnaire
Entering international students are required to complete an online TB screening questionnaire to determine if they must get a TB test. To complete the questionnaire:

  • Log in to the MyUHS portal using your UTEID and password.
  • Click "Medical Clearance".
  • Locate “TB Screening” on the page and click the “Update” button.
  • Answer the questions and submit your TB screening.
  • If a TB test is necessary, you will see the TB Test requirement added when you go back to Medical Clearances.

If you are required to get a TB test:

  • The TB test must be performed in the United States. This must be done before your first class day.
  • For students entering Spring 2024, the test must be performed on or after September 1, 2023. For students entering Summer or Fall 2024, the test must be performed on or after March 1, 2024.
  • Once you have satisfied your immunization requirements and completed the TB screening questionnaire, your medical bar will be temporarily lifted so that you can register for classes. The medical bar will be permanently lifted after you have fulfilled the TB testing requirements.
  • If you do not follow through with the required TB testing, the medical bar will be placed back onto your account.

TB tests are performed at University Health Services:

  • UHS offers special international student clinics in January and August of each year. If you arrive prior to these scheduled international clinics and want to be seen earlier, you can schedule an appointment online or call 512-475-8301.
  • A chest x-ray is NOT ACCEPTABLE as a substitute for one of the following tests

Acceptable (FDA) approved tests: TB tests performed outside of the U.S. cannot be accepted.

  • QuantiFERON®-TB Gold Plus - must be performed in the United States
  • T-SPOT®.TB test (T-Spot) - must be performed in the United States

To upload your acceptable (FDA) approved tests go to your MyUHS portal under the Medical Clearance TB test section look for TB testing and clickthe “Update” button.

IF YOUR TB TEST IS POSITIVE

Further medical evaluation and a chest x-ray must be performed. You have the following two options:

1. Have your chest x-ray completed at UHS.

  • First, schedule a telehealth visit with the TB provider at UHS.
  • You MUST be in TEXAS at the time of your telehealth appointment
  • Log in to the MyUHS portal and click “Appointments”
  • Follow the prompts
  • Select “I want to schedule a Tuberculosis test or follow up visit.”
  • Select “I tested positive for TB and want to schedule a Telehealth visit”
  • Schedule “Positive TB test consult w/ AIT provider”
  • Complete the pre-visit questionnaire
  • Your provider will order the chest x-ray and explain the clearance process further at your appointment

2. Obtain your chest x-ray prior to coming to campus. The chest x-ray must be performed in the United States. You are required to submit the chest x-ray report written by the radiologist AND a TB risk and symptom form.

To submit:

  • Log in to the MyUHS portal and click "Messages"
  • Click “New Message” and select “I want to submit my Chest x-ray and TB risk and symptom form due to testing positive for Tuberculosis infection.”
  • Click “Add attachment”
  • Select your chest x-ray file and click “open”
  • Complete the questions in the TB risk and symptom form
  • Click ”Send”

Measles, Mumps, Rubella Immunity

Proof of immunity to measles, mumps and rubella that is documented in ONE of the following ways:

  • Two doses of measles vaccine, two doses of mumps vaccine, administered on or after the first birthday and at least 28 days apart, and one dose of rubella vaccine administered on or after the first birthday.

OR

  • Two doses of MMR vaccine administered on or after the first birthday and at least 28 days apart.

OR

  • Positive blood tests showing protective antibodies to measles, mumps and rubella (must include official lab report).

Important: If you get a blood test (titer) to prove immunity to measles, mumps and/or rubella, you must also submit a copy of the official lab report even if the lab results are written on the TB and Vaccination History for International Students form.

Insurance

UHS accepts most major U.S. insurance plans. All international students are automatically enrolled in the UT System student health insurance plan – AcademicBlue or SHIP. Please note, for students entering UT in the fall semester, this insurance does not become active until August 1.

Vaccines and TB tests at UHS are covered by the Student Health Insurance Plan.

If you choose to receive vaccines and/or TB tests prior to your insurance effective date, the charges will be at your own expense.

Students who enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan may use University Health Services as soon as their insurance coverage begins, which may occur before the semester begins.

To Obtain a Copy of Your AcademicBlue Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) Insurance Card – For Domestic and International Students:

  1. Go to the AHP website: https://www3.academichealthplans.com/findCoverage
  2. Enter your EID and date of birth.
  3. After, a screen will populate that will allow you to select Find Group and Member ID.
  4. Once you have obtained your Group and Member ID, create an account within the BCBS Blue Access for Members (BAM) system.
  5. Within this system, click on the ID card icon on the left side of the page.
  6. Download a digital copy of the card to keep on your phone for instant access.
  7. You can also print a copy or order a new physical card.
    • If you would like to request a physical card, it is imperative that you first confirm or update your mailing address within the BAM system, UT Direct and myIO.
    • The default mailing address for all new international students is Texas Global at UT Austin. Texas Global cannot accept your insurance card on your behalf, so it will be destroyed upon receipt.

Getting Vaccines and TB tests at UHS

You can receive all required vaccines and TB tests at University Health Services. Vaccines and TB tests at UHS are covered by the Student Health Insurance Plan. It may take up to 5 days to obtain your tests results. Bring your passport or photo ID to your appointment.

International Student Clinics

Special International Student Clinics are offered every January and August to ensure that all students have the opportunity to obtain all needed tests and vaccines before registration.

August 2024 clinic dates

  • August 16 from 11:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.,
  • August 19, 20, and 23 from 8:30 a.m.- 4:00 p.m.

Location:
Allergy, Immunization, and Travel Clinic (2.102) within the Student Services Building.

Before scheduling your appointment:

1. Complete your TB screening.

2. If you have not completed the TB screening, follow these steps:

  • Navigate to your MyUHS portal.
  • Log in with your UT EID and password.
  • Click Medical Clearances.
  • Click TB screening, answer the questions and click submit.
  • The next screen you see will tell you if further action is needed to satisfy the TB medical clearance fully.
  • If a TB test is required, it must be performed in the United States and is available during the international student clinics.
  • Navigate back to the Medical Clearances page to review pending items needed for Medical Clearance.

  • Log into the MyUHS portal
  • Select Check-in or Schedule an Appointment
  • Schedule an Appointment
  • International Student Clinics
  • I am 18 or older and ready to book my appointment (if you are under 18, please see the minor consent page)
  • Continue
  • Set search start date to: 08/19/2024
  • Search for appointments

Available appointment dates and times will appear starting 08/19/2024 for you to select and complete your booking.
