Universal, the studio behind Hobbs & Shaw, has never confirmed a sequel or made an official development announcement. However, producer Hiram Garcia revealed to ComicBook.com in 2019 that talks of a sequel were underway. “We are having conversations, we were so happy with how it did,” Garcia said.

You don't really need to know much about any of the rest of the movies for it to work. This does set up for a sequel but I'm not sure it's needed. If you're a fan of the Fast and Furious franchise you may want to watch this just to complete the set but it's absolutely skippable if you don't want to watch it.
